Diego Rodriguez is a prominent jazz drummer, composer, and bandleader in Chicago's jazz scene. He is most widely recognized as the founder and leader of the Diego Rodriguez Big Band (DRBB), a 19-piece contemporary jazz ensemble that debuted in Chicago in December 2022.
Rodriguez and his big band honor the legacy of Black American Music. Their diverse repertoire seamlessly blends Post-Bop, R&B, and Latin jazz influences, featuring unique arrangements alongside Rodriguez's own original compositions. The ensemble has earned a reputation for bringing a fresh, highly dynamic energy to large-ensemble jazz.
Beyond directing his 19-piece big band, he frequently coordinates smaller configurations, such as the Diego Rodriguez Sextet and the Diego Rodriguez Group. He is highly collaborative and regularly shares the bandstand with premier local and national jazz artists, including: • Steve Wilson and Walter Smith III as well as Chicago Pillars Marques Carroll, Victor Garcia, Kellin Hanas, Tom Garling, Abigail Riccards, and Jeremy Kahn.
